I had close contact with my sister who later tested positive, but I didn’t want to ruin family plans, so I tested right away. PCR said negative, so we went ahead — and three days later, bam, positive result. The doctor later told me that the virus needs a few days to replicate enough for the test to detect it. The PCR is still the most reliable, but you’ve got to give it time. I started reading more about how the viral load builds up and how different test methods detect different parts of the virus. There’s this section called definition of retrovirus that actually helped me understand how timing plays into detection and why early tests can miss it. Now I stick to this pattern: if I’ve been around someone who’s infected, I wait about 3 to 5 days before testing, even if I feel fine. It’s a little nerve-wracking, but it gives a clearer result and avoids false negatives. I also keep a few antigen tests on hand just to check in between, though those can be hit or miss too.
