What

Would love to prolong my Monero coding for another 3 months and dedicate 40h/week, i.e. to work full-time.

There are some specific tasks i would like to work on first.

As usual will be working on Monero Core and Monero GUI code:

  • Inspecting and implementing ongoing feature requests
  • Submitting bug fixes
  • New functionality
  • Code review
  • Putting my efforts where it is appropriate

Who

I'm Xiphon, active contributor to Monero Core and Monero GUI since July 2018.

My previous CCS proposals:

During the recent 30h/week proposal i implemented:

in order to not clutter the proposal i'm not listing all the related pull requests. I strongly encourage you to visit the following Github links to see the amount of work done by me, its quality and importance for the Monero Project.

Please check the following links to inspect my Monero-related activity:

Proposal

Looking forward to coding and accomplishing mentioned and ongoing tasks and issues. Implementing new code/functionality that will be needed. Investigating bug reports and submitting bug fixes, fixing build and compilations errors/warnings/etc. Would like to inspect and complete/fix/address issues and feature requests that are reasonably desired and/or worth to spend time on. Improving GUI, fixing UI/UX issues, implementing design changes.

Dedicate 40 hours per week to Monero Project, at 55 USD/hour rate for a total of 181 XMR. XMR/USD rate is based on the 14-day moving average exponential on Kraken from 5 Feb 2021, which is approximately 146.17 XMR/USD.

    • Have we come to consensus on the 14 word seed? Why is this change a top priority?

    • Author Contributor

This change is long overdue. Not encoding wallet birthday into seed phrase is actually a huge problem. To date, the issue already resulted in hundreds, if not thousands, of support requests from individuals facing problems just because we don't include wallet restore height in the seed phrase. Given Monero's constantly growing adoption rate, the longer we postpone implementing this, the more and more people experiencing issues we will see.

There weren't any other seed schemes proposed yet that are clearly better than @tevador's one. The specific 14 word seed scheme has no major drawbacks, encodes wallet restore height, supports seed versioning (e.g. provides 5 reserved feature bits), and makes the seed phrase way shorter as well, which in turn is definitely a plus, one can even memorize 14 word seed, which is almost impossible to do with 25 word seed. Going forward and integrating @tevador's PoC that implements his 14 word seed idea and all the underlying primitives, is a smart and right thing to do.

Either way, we should implement a scheme that encodes wallet restore height.

The integration code i plan to work on:

      1. Should be seed scheme agnostic
      2. Support encoded wallet restore height
      3. Support multiple seed schemes
      4. Recognize seed scheme by seed phrase provided

Thus, the integration code will not drastically change, even if the community comes to consensus on using another seed scheme.

    • Thanks for the rundown on 14 word seed @xiphon

Definitely agree that building wallet birthday into the seed will greatly improve the Monero UX going forward. It will also save a lot of headaches both for beginner users who aren't familiar with the need to set a block height/date when restoring - and members who have to offer support when these issues crop up.

Also agree about 14 words improving the probability of remembering the seed vs 25 words.

Will be happy to donate towards this.

    mentioned in commit 813dad7b

  • The core team decided to allocate 18.1 XMR from the General Fund to this proposal. Just sent in tx 9e81ec04f7ab89b70765878635cbf9fdbd7f9b93da013e594a2a5562e2c79a7b.

  • Yeah he's not coming back. At least they where compensated for their contributions:

    Author: xiphon
      2019: 190.0 Monero, $12533.36 USD
      2020: 1051.0 Monero, $86310.75 USD
      2021: 222.0 Monero, $56598.92 USD

Time to close this, and mark the funds as residing in the General Fund (which they already are after the ccs wallet incident)
