Add Monero to TxStreet

Merged TxStreet requested to merge txstreet/ccs-proposals:txstreet into master
6 unresolved threads

Hello! My name is Tom and I run txstreet.com. (Proof - http://out.txstreet.com/getmonero). I was recommended the CCS by a member of the Monero community to fund the addition of Monero to TxStreet. Because the website remains closed source for now, this proposal will be framed as an advertising campaign.

I have reduced the funding to the minimum amount of what I think is necessary for Monero to remain operational on the website. I do not want to make any profit off of the CCS.

What is TxStreet?

TxStreet.com is a live cryptocurrency transaction visualizer featuring Bitcoin, Ethereum and Bitcoin Cash. When a new transaction is broadcasted to a cryptocurrency, a person appears and attempts to board a bus. If the transaction has a high enough fee, they will board the first bus and be ready to be included in the next mined block. If there are too many transactions to be included in the next block, and the transaction didn't pay a high enough fee, the person will either wait in line or board a different bus. Consecutive buses will appear when there are enough transactions to fill them.

TxStreet has become popular in other crypto communites, here are some examples of people talking about it:

Traffic estimate is 200k - 300k unique visitors per month based off of fathom showing 110k UV in the last month and cloudflare showing 650k UV in the last month. Fathom can be blocked client side by adblockers and cloudflare includes traffic from bots, which is why there is a large discrepancy.

How Monero will be presented

Monero will have it's own street just like the other supported coins. Live stats that will be shown:

  • Broadcasted Tx/Sec (Past 5 mins)
  • Confirmed Tx/Sec (Past hour)
  • Mempool Size (Bytes)
  • Mempool Count
  • Median Fee (USD)
  • Median Fee (Atomic units per byte)
  • Bytes/Second (Past 5 mins)
  • Ciruclating Supply
  • Price (USD)
  • Last Block
  • Median Txs Per Block (Past Hour)
  • Blockchain Size
  • Difficulty
  • Block Size Limit (Current)
  • Median Block Size (Past Hour)
  • Average Block Time (Past 250 Blocks)
  • Market Cap (USD)
  • 24 Hour Volume (USD)

The coins that TxStreet currently supports have no privacy by default, so it is possible to parse the data from transactions and categorize them into "houses". Since Monero has strong privacy and all of the information from each transaction is hidden (besides fee, size etc.), there will be no need for the houses and that section can be removed completely. Or if the community prefers, it can be replaced with something else.

To further convey the message of privacy, every "person" (transaction) will be an identical sprite. I have been suggested "Monero Memeball" or "Isabella Monero Girl" for the sprite. Initially I wanted to do a black trench coat, but was informed that there is a stigma towards that. The final decision will be "Monero Memeball" unless the community has feedback on this. When completed, the Monero street will be viewable here: https://txstreet.com/v/xmr Alongside bitcoin, it will be viewable here: https://txstreet.com/v/xmr-btc

To get to the Monero street, users can click the dropdown in the top left/right of other streets. For the first month, a large notification will show once for each user saying "New Street! View Monero".

Cost breakdown

Milestone 1 - Monero street complete and live

20 XMR. I estimate it will take 1-2 months to complete.

Milestones 2-5 - Additional 3 months of advertising

2.5 XMR for server costs. ($120/month base estimate)

2 XMR for maintenance.

This proposal is for 1 year of advertising. After 1 year, another proposal will be submitted for additional funding. If funding is not met, the operational costs of the Monero street will have to be paid for by me and the Monero street will be subject to removal if I can't cover those costs.

What do you mean by 1 year of "advertising"? Is it to cover the opportunity cost of not showing ads on the page? Will you display banner ads on the page if we don't pay? Or is it referring to something else?

Advertising is referring to Monero itself on TxStreet. This proposal is framed as an advertising campaign for Monero. If the proposal isn't funded then Monero won't be added.

    • TxStreet is a fantastic gimmick that I have spent time enjoying both myself and sharing with friends. However, is the advertising benefit for Monero that significant? Let's look at a few factors here -

      • 25 XMR is not cheap. Regarding work done, the Monero Outreach group does substantially more (with only ~1.3x the funding)
      • TxStreet's UI will grow more cluttered as time goes on and as more coins are added
      • If I understand correctly, more features means more traffic for TxStreet
      • Unless TxStreet is running their own node, we're signing up for recurring payments to a website which gets its data off a free APIs

I'm not opposed to this, and the creativity for the Monero busses is quite the added touch, but nonetheless dsc_, a top Monero contributor, asked for only $50/hr, or roughly 1 month of work for this same price. It always starts to make me uneasy when bells and whistles make up a notable amount of CCS donations.

I'm glad you like it.

People should know that TxStreet isn't just a pretty frontend pulling data from other APIs. I run all my own nodes (Monero will be one of those), calculate all the data with my own backend, and then emit all the live transactions, blocks and stats to each client from my own servers. How does the Monero community benefit from this? It is another free independent data source. The only data points that are outsourced are related to price and exchange volume.

I have been a fan of Monero for many years, and this is the only reason I am considering adding it. Because like you said "TxStreet's UI will grow more cluttered as time goes on and as more coins are added". I am not constantly looking to add new coins to maintain, even though I am constantly asked to do so. I like to add new features more than I do new coins, and Monero should benefit from this.

With server/node costs, and my time put into this, I will not be making a profit off of the amount I am asking. Yes I will also slightly benefit from increased traffic, that is if the Monero community clicks on the ledger sprite and buys a ledger HW. But the large majority of funding TxStreet (all coins) comes from donations.

    • I like this, I have the used website at times, albeit not extensively.

I would support this proposal and ad in on the funding.

However, one question. How much coins / token are you considering adding right now ? Are you basically offering to add the top 20 coins at this point in time or are you strictly considering adding Monero here.

    • In another comment, he said:

IMO, the general thought and creativity posed in the CCS shows he's thought it through, and wants to give Monero a high quality standing on the site.

@dginovker is right. I am aiming for quality over quantity. As far as adding more coins, the only plans I have (after Monero) are ETH layer 2 solutions.

    • I read the proposal. Im asking for clarification tho. Its possible this very same proposal is sitting on Dash, Zcash, Polkadot, Litecoin and 5 other forums.

      EDIT sniped.

  • I'm probably in slight favor of the proposal, though some of the "advertising" wording puts me off a bit.

So long as donors "advertise" to have this page up, it would make the most sense to me that the website wasn't promoting other ads, such as for its own NFTs as it does now.

That being said, I fully expect the amount of Monero traffic to the website to allow the site to cover its own costs for supporting Monero going forward, through things like "games" and "NFTs", or anything else (eg: Kraken/Cake ads).

Ideally, I would rather the proposal include an exclusivity provision, whereby users who are viewing the Monero visualization will not see other promotions or ads for the year that donors here are supporting the website. If there's a comparison mode with another coin, the exclusivity could not apply - that's fine to me so long as Monero still has a dedicated page.

If this exclusivity is not possible, that definitely sucks. Still, I think the proposal should be moved even in this case.

  • I support this proposal

  • I have much time mesmerized by txstreet; I confess to posting on Memo sometimes just to see it show up there :)

Do I understand the cost proposal correctly?

    • one-time 20 XMR to develop it and have it deployed for 1yr, and then
    • (2+2.5=) 4.5 XMR each 3 months thereafter

    Yes?

If so (or that's not too far wide of the mark), I'm totally on board
