I belive it is very important to have the monero source code on a uncensorable platform on tor. This will serve as a sort of archive in case something happens. Something bad has to only happen once.
Who?
I am the solo maintainer of MoneroOS a linux distribution that starts mining on boot and makes p2pool mining quite easy among other things. I have been using monero for quite a while and have started creating a couple of small projects like the one above.
Why?
Monero needs a way to protect its source code from censorship on platforms like github. Having one central place for everything as you may know (pun intended), is not the best idea. Especially for high value targets like monero. This is why having another source is always great!
What?
I will be selfhosting a gitea instance on tor. It can already be accessed via this address iji2hhxnh4jfyx6q2wenr7bo2p2jmsmk7dzu5pvh2s2gupud472mihad.onion
. Note that this address is subject to change. I will of course give some notice. I have mirrored the monero
repository, the monero-gui
repository and the monero-site
repository.
This proposal is for 1 year of hosting and maintenance.
Milestones
In order to make this as smooth as possible as trustless as possible, because of the difficulties faced with the previous person who tried to do this, I will be asking for a payout at the start of each month. If of course the website has been functioning for the previous month. If it has not no payout will be sent. (September 2023 is on the house). Since I am actually selfhosting this I can not guarantee a 100% percent uptime but I will try to have as little down time as possible. (more than 90% uptime) This proposal can be considered expired after 2 months of down time and no official response from me. If that happens please donate all the remaining funds to other css proposals.

I feel my comment (left on a similar proposal) applies directly to this one also !361 (closed)
We do have 0.2xmr in limbo from the failed archive proposal !339 (merged)
I just wanted to point out that the gitea instance has had 100% uptime since this proposal was posted here (~ 2 weeks ago). I also want to point out some other reasons why this proposal should move to funding. Having a tor mirror not only serves as a censorship resistant archive, it is also a way for the monero community to interact with the software via tor (a network that allows people from censored countries to access it) and gitea (a free and open source GitHub alternative) that doesn't track or monetize its users. We can not say that monero is pro privacy if we host everything on a proprietary platform known to censor privacy projects. The monero community deserves better than that. That is why I believe this is vital to the monero community.
At the last Monero Community Workgroup meeting, there were some discussions.
The main points are that Git is decentralized, backups are already in place and have been tested, Wownero has a mirror.
The hosting is quite inexpensive, and is very simple to set up. I believe that a CCS is too much for something this small.
I also just began hosting a mirror (and a Gitea server for anyone who wants to use it) over Tor.
Edited by recanmanSince this proposal does not seem to be moving forward and since the community does not believe it is important enough to merge I will be closing this MR. Since I still believe this is vital to the monero community I will keep on hosting it. I have spent way too much time trying to get this proposal to merge for a pretty small amount. My time is better spent on trying to improve the gitea instance. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
