Translation Coordinator for the Monero Project

My first proposal is now completed and I would like to continue working as translation coordinator for the upcoming months. You can read more about the initial proposal here, also read the reports in the comments and on reddit.

As stated before, the Monero Project has always benefited from having well structured and consistent translations across its many resources and I want to keep that going.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities remain the same as before, summarized as:

1. Manage translators and their work on Weblate for the following projects:

3. Maintain a list of contributors and their working language;
4. Take care of translations-related CCS (the current system is not optimal and needs to be improved. See more bellow.);
5. Maintain translation documentation on different repositories;

9. Issue progress reports on a monthly basis as GitLab comments and share within the community (e.g. Reddit/Matrix/IRC)

Limitation of Scope

Core Team is looking for someone to manage the backend structure as ErCiccione announced they're stepping down (update Weblate, bug issues, etc). I will maintain the languages on Weblate, help and find translators, update the documentation, etc. as highlighted above.

Milestones and Funding

Now I would like to keep this CCS as 3-months proposals for long-term commitment. This proposal will consist of about 20h/week from December 1st, 2021 to February 28th, 2022 at a rate of 30€/h I'm rounding to 45 XMR (1 xmr = 170€ at Kraken). Translation coordination work covers the whole process of managing translations, community members, weblate and the repositories. We're are still having many merging conflicts on Weblate and some integrations are not working properly. Resolving that will ensure we have a friction-free process.

We've had some desparate problems with translation in the past, for which a manager would help a lot. I remember folks coming (and then going very fast) who wanted to machine translate poorly, and we never learned what possible motivation they could have. Because they participated very little in community discussions.

Hmm, so there are some good reasons to persue this idea.

The problems started when i stepped down from the role of coordinator and we (i and core) decided to change the rules of the ccs for translators. Those contributors took advantage of the gap to make poor machine translations. We managed to fix the situation, but indeed, it was a pain.

That said, i support Netrik's proposal. He has been doing a good job and the improvements proposed are very needed. I'll be happy to keep answering questions and give my support when needed.

Hello and happy new year! As always, I would like to thank the community for their support and funding.

Here is the community report for December 2021. And before starting, I also must thank all translation contributors for their work. December was a good month where I could help new translators with questions in our matrix/irc room and new people started contributing.

There was a big PR to update translations for Monero GUI Wallet, which can be found here https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui/pull/3811. Those changes reflect new strings for a variety of languages:

• Afrikaans, which is now translated at 100.0% (724 of 724 strings)
• Romanian: Currently translated at 99.4% (720 of 724 strings)
• Dutch: Currently translated at 83.7% (642 of 767 strings)
• Japanese: Currently translated at 97.5% (706 of 724 strings)
• Hungarian: Currently translated at 94.3% (683 of 724 strings)
• Hebrew: Currently translated at 42.5% (326 of 767 strings)
• Dutch: Currently translated at 83.7% (642 of 767 strings)
• Polish: Currently translated at 90.0% (691 of 767 strings)
• Chinese (Simplified): Currently translated at 77.7% (596 of 767 strings)
• German: Currently translated at 90.2% (693 of 768 strings)

On the documentation front, I just wrote a how-to guide to keep the monero-gui updated on Weblate. I also opened an issue at each Monero repository to configure 'webhooks' (see https://github.com/monero-project/monero-site/issues/1907). They will help automate pulling changes from upstream and therefore, keep Weblate in sync. It's worth noting though that as selsta and erciccione stated on #monero-dev, those hooks would only really benefit monero-site, as both CLI and GUI need to be updated manually anyway because of the way the .ts files work. I still think it's worth setting them up as it'll be one less manual update from my side.

Still in December, I started trying to add screenshot 'context' (https://docs.weblate.org/en/weblate-4.8/admin/translating.html#screenshots) to Monero GUI on Weblate. This will help translators better understand where a particular text/string is placed in the wallet interface. It did not work yet and I need to investigate what's happening but it looks like a Weblate issue when displaying the image.

As for January, I will push translations to getmonero.org website since we have had some progress from contributors. I'll also start looking into adding moneropedia entries to Weblate as per https://github.com/monero-ecosystem/monero-translations/issues/108. A 'call for translators' post on reddit is planned for the following days.

Here is the community report for January 2022. As always, I must thank all translation contributors for their work. This month I was a little bit busier then usual with other activities outside of Monero and that's why I delayed this report a bit. Most things will be resolved next week so February should be fine.

Following the trend of previous months, I am aiming to make a PR for 'Monero GUI Wallet' and another for 'getmonero.org Website' each month given enough changes/new translations. The PR to update translations for Monero GUI Wallet can be found at https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui/pull/3832. Those changes reflect new strings for a variety of languages:

I will wait some more time to send the getmonero.org PR because we have some contributors working on it as of now.

As I said in the previous report I wrote a how-to guide to keep the monero and monero-gui updated on Weblate and it's now included in out main repo (https://github.com/monero-ecosystem/monero-translations/blob/master/keeping-weblate-updated.md). This is an internal documentation that will help new coordinators that may come in the future.
